Operations are getting back to normal at Emporia State University’s Beach Hall after extensive renovations.
Significant cracking had developed inside the building over time, with notable sagging outside the south entrance. Director of Facility Planning Peter Hauff has said the initial plan was to jack up the affected area, but that plan was adjusted because the space was too heavy. Instead, new concrete was poured around the south entrance in December, with work indoors around the main stairwell, painting and related projects taking place the last few months.
Music Professor Allan Comstock says the project is well-timed — and not just because the renovations were needed.
Audio PlayerThe building was named for Frank Beach, who led then-Kansas Normal School’s music department for 20 years and organized the first statewide high school music contest in the country as part of his achievements.
More work is ahead to finish the project, including the addition of an expanded patio space with outdoor furniture.
