The #1 Central Missouri baseball team singled in the game winning run to beat the Hornets 3-2 on Monday in Warrensburg, Mo. in a weather-delayed series. The victory was the second in walk-off fashion for UCM and let the Mules sweep the three-game series. The Mules took the lead with runs in the first and third before the Hornets got on the board on a Konner Hatfield RBI single in the fifth. ESU extended the game when Noah Steele homered to tie it in the top of the ninth before Central pulled off the win. Both pitching staffs were solid with only nine combined hits in the game with Cade Barton (4-1) taking a hard-luck loss going 8.1 innings and giving up three hits and three runs in the game to suffer his first defeat of the year. Nick Woodcock came on in the ninth but couldn’t keep the Mules off the board and gave up the game-winning hit. Steele went 2-for-3 for E-State at the plate. The Hornets (16-16, 9-12 MIAA) will try to snap their four-game losing streak Wednesday when they host Fort Hays State for game two of their second MIAA midweek series. The Tigers lead the series 1-0 after a 15-5 run rule of the Hornets on March 25 in Hays. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
