The Emporia High baseball team extended its winning streak with a sweep over Junction City on Tuesday.
Emporia High won the first game, 5-2, and had to hold off a comeback by the Blue Jays in the second game, 5-4. In game one, Junction City held a 1-0 lead through two innings before the Spartans erupted for four runs in the third. Madden Seidl tied the game at 1 with an RBI single, which was followed by a 2-run triple by Owen Ruge and wrapped up with an RBI single by Andrew Ruxton. Luke Marshall scored the Spartans’ final run in the seventh on a fielder’s choice. Seidl threw a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits and 10 strikeouts. while Micah Gray went 3-for-3 at the plate. In game two, Gray had a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in the first. The Spartans scored three in the third, RBI singles by Grady Howe and Ruge and Ruge scoring on an error. After the Blue Jays made it 4-1 after three, the Spartans got their final run in the fourth on an RBI single by Seidl. The Blue Jays scored three in the seventh and had two on but the game-winning runner was picked off at first base. Andrew Ruxton got the win on the mound going six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and six strikeouts. Gray went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Emporia High (6-1, 2-0 Centennial) hosts Washburn Rural on Friday at 4 p.m. at Soden’s Grove.
