Judges with the Kansas Court of Appeals made a visit to the campus of Emporia State University Tuesday.
Judges Karen Arnold-Burger, PJ Cline and JJ Gardner held court inside of the ESU Memorial Union’s Webb Hall where they heard two cases:
*Richard Gould was appealing a malpractice suit filed in Lyon County against Drs. Patricia Crawley and Michael Lloyd, as well as Newman Regional Health.
*In a Shawnee County case, Jesse Lydell Hicks was appealing a 2023 conviction in a driving under the influence and child endangerment case.
Emporia State was one of four college and university campuses across Kansas to host a traveling panel of judges. Additional locations included Fort Hays State University, Johnson County Community College and Pittsburg State University. This is the first time in history the Court of Appeals has visited four colleges or universities during the same docket.
ESU Assistant General Counsel Tyler Pettigrew recently spoke with KVOE News about the traveling panel’s appearance on campus, saying it was an honor for the university to have been selected. Pettigrew adds, the experience of witnessing a true court proceeding in person was a great opportunity for the entire campus, noting the judicial process affects more individuals across various disciplines of study than one might first think.
