The National Teachers Hall of Fame is announcing a major gift and a significant change to its annual induction announcement procedure.
1992 inductee Anna Alfiero of Norwich, Connecticut, passed away two years ago, but not before setting aside over $500,000 for the Hall of Fame. The estate gift was recently received.
Alfiero taught middle school science and math for 35 years and became a guidance counselor shortly after her induction.
Hall of Fame Director Maddie Fennell says the gift is getting incorporated into the Hall’s long-term strategic plan, focusing on “getting inductee voices out” through an updated website, revamped museum, new podcast and other methods.
The Hall is also getting voices out through another way entirely. Since the first induction in 1992, the Hall has gone to inductee schools for surprise announcements. This year, the Hall of Fame will appear on the CBS Mornings program May 19 to make the announcements.
Induction ceremonies in Emporia will take place June 16-20.
