Emporia High will be searching for a new golf coach after this spring.
During Wednesday’s USD 253 Board of Education meeting, the board approved the resignation of Rick Eckert from his teaching and coaching position effective May 30, 2025 after the Spartans play the 5A State Championships at Emporia Golf Course. Eckert has led both the boys and girls programs at EHS for over 20 years, with the Lady Spartans having their best finish in 2022 of second at state and also winning the program’s first Centennial League championship. Eckert was named Kansas Coaches Association’s Girls Golf Coach of the Year that season. Eckert also coached Gentry Scheve, who went on to play four years at the University of Nebraska. The Emporia High boys golf team opens its season Thursday at Wamego for the Washburn Rural Invitational.
