Solemnity shrouded the dedication of Emporia’s brand-new Latino Veterans Memorial on Saturday.
Audio PlayerThe memorial was installed recently at Sacred Heart Cemetery, following work by Emporia’s Brown Express Club, Emporia State Intercultural Center and others, and Saturday’s ceremony featured an unveiling, Catholic blessing, a gun salute, playing of the national anthem and Taps and a recognition of sponsors. Brown Express spokesman Gilbert Rodriguez says it was emotional to see the new memorial and what it means for Emporia’s history.

Audio PlayerThe memorial is the latest honoring local service personnel in the founding city of Veterans Day. Work continues to expand the Tablets of Honor area at the All Veterans Memorial. There is also the Mexican-American World War II Veterans Memorial at St Catherine’s Catholic Church, the Spanish-American War Memorial at Peter Pan Park and Civil War Veterans monuments at Fremont Park and Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Organizers of the Latino Veterans Memorial effort are now working on the third annual Latino Awards Adelante event to be held Sept. 20 at the Lyon County History Center.
