The Emporia State baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up short as Washburn nipped the Hornets 14-13 to claim game two of the three-game Turnpike Tussle Series at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia on Saturday. The teams combined for 30 hits in a game that Washburn never trailed following a 1-0 lead after homering on the first pitch of the game. ESU answered with a run in the second before the Ichabods plated two in the third. Leading 3-2 through four, the ‘Bods ripped off five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to bury the Hornets behind a 10-2 deficit, but E-State responded with two in the sixth and a four-spot in the seventh. Washburn cranked back-to-back-to-back home runs in the ninth before five Emporia State runs scored with Peyton Lewis blasting a three-run homer to put ESU down just one, but the Hornets popped out to end the game. Dominic Felix led the offense going 3-for-4 and scoring four runs while Sammy Padilla and Lewis each drove in three. ESU meets Washburn in the rubber match Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Pregame coverage is set for 12:50 p.m. on the Hornet Sports Network/Mix 104.9.
