The Emporia State baseball team fell 12-6 in game three of the Turnpike Tussle at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia on Sunday. The Ichabods won the series two games to one.
Each team plated a run in the first before Washburn tacked on single runs in the second and third. Washburn led 5-3 through six after the teams traded solo home runs in the sixth and scored five runs in the seventh to blow the game open. The Ichabods added one in the eighth before Noah Steele crushed a three-run homer to centerfield to get ESU back within four, but Washburn scored two insurance runs in the ninth. The Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t score. Cade Barton (4-2) went 6.0 innings and gave up seven hits and four runs to take the loss, but the Hornet bullpen struggled. Head coach Brad Hill said the Hornets need to find solutions in the bullpen for the middle innings.
