Emporia State athletics announced Tuesday that Melissa “MJ” Baker has been named the ninth head coach of Lady Hornet basketball. Baker replaces Brian Ostermann who resigned in March following two years with the program. Baker previously spent eight seasons at Eastern Florida State College. There she led the Titans to a 183-58 record with three NJCAA Division I Tournament appearances and three conference titles. Baker began her career as a high school coach leading John Curtis High School to back-to-back Louisiana state championships in 2008 and 2009. She then went 35-24 in two years at Spartanburg Methodist winning one conference title. She went 51-46 over the next three seasons at Bluefield before winning two conference titles in three years between 2014 and 2017 at Broward College. As a player, Baker was an honorable mention All-American at the University of West Florida where she is still the career record holder in rebounds and blocked shots before enjoying a professional career in Germany. Baker has a career record of 334-148 at the collegiate level with a 162-61 mark in conference play.
