For the first time this season, the Emporia High baseball team was swept in a doubleheader.
Hayden, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, defeated the No. 8 team in 5A, 14-0 in six innings and rallied for a 5-3 victory in the finale. Andrew Ruxton took the loss on the mound, going four innings allowing six runs on eight hits and two strikeouts. In game two, the Spartans were in command throughout, beginning in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Luke Marshall and Chase Harrington’s 2-run triple in the fifth to put EHS up 3-0. Hayden rallied back in the seventh with five runs to take the win. Madden Seidl went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and six strikeouts, earning a no-decision. Harrington went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Emporia High coach Anthony Markowitz said the Spartans were right there competing against one of the better teams in the state.
