Hornets for Hope is active again at Emporia State University, and the latest sign of that is the upcoming Suicide Prevention Walk on campus this Saturday.
Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention Director Melissa Owen says suicide rates increased after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Beacon reached out to see if there was revived interest in a Hornets for Hope support group. Initially, not much interest developed, but that soon changed and nearly 10 students are now part of the group.
Owen also says Hornets for Hope has become Beacon’s campus organization, serving to connect students to available resources in case they or others they know are struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Activities are available from 10 am to 2 pm, starting at Emporia State’s Kellogg Circle. Registration is free, with raffles, resources and a lived-experience speaker as part of the event.
