Right now it looks like a “road closed” sign. But the end is now in sight for the 24th and Prairie Waterline Replacement Project.
Work has been underway for close to a year, and Emporia City Engineer Jim Ubert — a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday — says work could be done by the end of May. Short-term, Ubert says the 15th and Prairie intersection will open up next week, although that means the closure of the 12th and Prairie intersection as work continues.
Looking back at the project so far, Ubert says benefits are already apparent.
Work has gone from the Water Treatment Plant at 24th and Industrial east to Prairie and south to 12th.
As work ends for the 24th and Prairie project, it will begin for the Southeast Transmission Waterline Project, with work possibly starting by June. The Southeast project will stretch over five miles and — eventually — will go from 12th and Garfield to the water tower near South and Carter.
Both projects are designed to improve water reliability and safety across town.
