Emporia State University has welcomed a new leader for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
In a news release Thursday, the university announced the hiring of Dr. Mark Meister as the school’s first permanent dean. Dr. Meister brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in both faculty and administrative roles, having spent a lengthy period at North Dakota State University from 1997 to 2020 before moving on to Central Washington University, where he held positions as a professor and the associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.
Meister holds several degrees, including a bachelor’s in communication and English writing from Carroll College in Montana, a master’s degree in speech communication from North Dakota State and a Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has also taught courses on various subjects including rhetorcial theory, communication ethics, rhetorical criticism and argumentation.
In the aforementioned news release, Meister expressed his excitement to join “ESU’s profound tradition and legacy of student-centeredness and academic excellence.” Of Meister’s appointment, ESU Provost and vice president for academic affairs Brent Thomas stated, “Dr. Meister impressed me with his focus on students and his deep commitment to student success. I am excited that Dr. Meister will join Hornet Nation as the inaugural dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.”
