Court proceedings have started in a Greenwood County rape case.
Following a first appearance in Eureka on Tuesday, Nathaniel Stephen Dewitt was set for a preliminary hearing May 23.
Dewitt faces single counts of rape and aggravated sexual battery. Charges follow an alleged incident April 19 that was reported on the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office report log as an assault in Madison.
Until late Tuesday, Dewitt had been listed as the owner and an executive at MT Networks, a telephone communications company based in Madison and serving residents in Greenwood and Coffey counties. In a social media statement, the company says it is “aware of the serious allegations and recent arrest” of Dewitt. It also says Dewitt “is no longer involved in the daily operations or daily management” of the company, effective immediately. It also says it is cooperating “with all relevant authorities” as the case unfolds.
