One of the big events on the SOS community calendar is taking place Thursday.
Take Back the Night is on the Emporia State University campus, courtesy of SOS and ESU THRIVE. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Wednesday, SOS Sexual Assault Advocate Coordinator Rachell Freeman says this is a way to learn more about sexual assault and sexual awareness — and for victims, possibly reduce the shame and guilt often attached.
Activities are tentatively set to begin outside Plumb Hall at 5:15 pm before moving inside Heath Recital Hall. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Diana Moore will talk briefly at Plumb Hall before a march to Heath, where Susan Fowler will talk about her book “Whistleblower” detailing sexual assault she suffered while employed at Uber. Fowler’s conversation begins at 6 pm, with a book signing to follow.
Rain is possible, and the current plan is to cancel the march if that happens.
SOS Executive Director Mickey Edwards said Take Back the Night comes with similar contact numbers from years past. However, the cases are coming with more danger for the victims.
SOS has a 24-7 helpline, 800-825-1295, and also offers connections for advocacy and therapy to help victims. SOS representatives can also attend medical appointments, law enforcement meetings and court hearings if requested.
