Fraudulent text messages about unpaid tolls are on the rise again.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says it seeing an increase in smishing, where residents get messages saying they owe money and offer a bogus link for payment.
In stressing the messages are not legitimate, KDOT says it “does not request or collect any form of payment via text message.” KDOT also says it does not collect tolls for any road across the state.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority has been dealing with smishing scams the last year.
If you receive a text demanding payment for tolls, you are told not to click any links in the text. Instead, go online to the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov and the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
