Shot clock will be coming to high school basketball for multiple classifications in the postseason beginning next academic year.
The Kansas High School Activities Association’s Executive Board approved the mandatory adoption of shot clock usage in the postseason for Classes 6A, 5A, and 4A for the 2025-26 season. Classes 3A and 2A will have postseason shot clock beginning in the 2026-27 season, and Classes 1A-DI and II beginning in the 2027-28 season. Also approved by the board on Thursday is taking the next step in its plan to move state basketball to four sites in the near future, moving quarterfinal games to a select group of neutral sites. KSHSAA plans to announce more information at a later date concerning state basketball changes.
In other approved items, state volleyball for all classes except Class 1A-Division II will be played over three days. This change is due to three sites hosting two classifications at one time. During even numbered years, 6A, 4A and 2A will play their pool play games on Thursday of the state tournament, while 5A, 3A and 1A-DI will play on Thursday of the state tournament during odd-numbered years For finals on Saturdays of the state tournament, 6A, 4A and 2A will be the morning session during even-numbered years while 5A, 3A and 1A will be the morning session during odd-numbered years.
In football, the KSHSAA Board of Directors has made an adjustment to the classification limits for teams eligible to compete in 8-player and 6-player football. For 8-player district football, assignments will be limited to schools with a maximum enrollment of 110 students in all grades except 12th. For 6-player football, assignments will be limited to schools with a maximum enrollment of 65 students in all grades except 12th. The change will go into effect for the next football districting cycle, which is set to begin for the 2026-27 season.
