The Kansas Turnpike is again reminding drivers to report texts about unpaid tolls.
The KTA has been dealing with smishing scams for about a year. Senior Customer Service Manager Donnell Brown says the KTA does not send unsolicited text messages about tolls. Drivers will only get texts from the KTA if they have a DriveKS account and have signed up for the alerts. They also have to log in to their DriveKS account to either view the bill or pay.
The KTA’s reminder follows similar language from the Kansas Department of Transportation, which says it “does not request or collect any form of payment via text message.” KDOT also says it does not collect tolls for any road across the state.
Random residents are getting messages saying they owe money. Those messages also offer a bogus link for payment.
If you receive a text demanding payment for tolls, you are told not to click any links in the text. Instead, go online to the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov and the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
