Emporia’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will be taking over downtown this weekend.
The annual event will be held Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in the 800 and 900 blocks of Commercial Street and will once again include all of the events and activities that the community has come to expect with the celebration. This includes an abundance of food and craft vendors, live music and a performance by Emporia State University’s Kappa Delta Chi sorority, which will be strolling through the downtown corridor, according to member Arisa Ortiz, a recent guest of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia.
The event, as always, is being co-organized by Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow and Emporia Main Street. HOTT President Mike Torres, also a recent guest of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, says that in addition to the music, food and other activities, HOTT will once again be presenting several scholarships to local students.
According to Torres, 27 students will be receiving a $500 scholarship, sharing in a total of more than $13,000. He and HOTT Vice President Michael Urrutia expect a large turnout in the downtown corridor based on prior attendance.
Urrutia, also a recent guest of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, is still relatively new to HOTT and says he has enjoyed participating in organizing the annual event.
