The Emporia State baseball team scored five in the second and four in the ninth on the way to a 10-3 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Sunday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. The Hornets won the series 2-1. ESU blew the game open with six hits in the second inning including five in a row with one out. The teams traded runs in the fifth before the Lions cut the deficit to three with a pair of runs in the seventh to make it 6-3 E-State. The Hornets put the game away with four runs in the eighth on a solo-shot by Logan Myers and a three-run blast by Jovanni Toledo. Nick Woodcock started and lasted three innings giving up no runs or hits in a no decision. He said he had plenty of confidence in his team behind him.
Head coach Brad Hill said the big second inning relaxed ESU.
Coby Rogers (2-2) pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win giving up one earned run and striking out four while Ian Lanik picked up his seventh save. Toledo finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Sammy Padilla went 3-for-4 driving in a pair of runs. Logan Myers finished 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Noah Steele with 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ESU (23-21, 16-17 MIAA) wraps up the regular season at Northwest Missouri for a three-game set beginning on Friday.
