Representatives of Council Grove Lake are calling for action from Federal lawmakers to avoid a potential closure of the lake.
A recent post on the Council Grove Marina’s official Facebook page claims Council Grove Lake is at risk of closure due to “a staffing crisis.” The post went on to say the federal hiring freeze has threatened the summer recreation season with all campground support positions currently “open.”
According to the Council Grove Marina, the summer season helps to generate nearly $9 million in revenue through visitor spending on top of creating dozens of jobs each year. The post claims that May 15th is the deadline for when the lake could potentially close, adding there is funding available to hire and pay individuals for the positions needed to continue operations.
The post concluded by imploring residents to reach out to state representatives at the Federal level, including US Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and US House District 2 Congressman Derek Schmidt, to exempt the lake from the hiring freeze. KVOE News has reached out to Marhsall, Moran, Schmidt and Council Grove Lake for comment.
