Formal charges are under discussion in multiple counties against an Arizona man after an alleged pursuit originating in Harvey County went through Marion and Chase counties before ending with an arrest in Lyon County.
Chase County Sheriff Jacob Welsh says his deputies were notified of a pursuit entering Chase County shortly after 8:20 pm Saturday, following an attempted traffic stop on an SUV by Harvey County deputies.
Chase County deputies tried stop sticks on US Highway 50 east of Elmdale, but the driver, later identified as 19-year-old Jose Espinoza-Carbajal of Glendale, Arizona, went into the westbound shoulder to avoid them. Deputies tried again with stop sticks on US-50 just west of Strong City, but the suspect vehicle left the highway and barely missed the deputies.
Lyon County deputies joined the pursuit as the SUV got onto Interstate 35 and drove north. A Lyon County deputy ended the pursuit by using a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver, or tapping one corner of another vehicle with the goal of spinning it out and ending its forward progress.
Espinoza-Carbajal was taken to the Chase County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement. Espinoza-Carbajal may face other charges in Lyon, Marion and Harvey counties after separate reviews by County Attorney staffers.
