Emporia High will be searching for its third girls basketball coach in two years.
Emporia High athletic director Beau Welch confirmed to KVOE Sports Friday morning that Taylor Scott has resigned after one season as head coach of the Lady Spartans. Scott said it was tough to step down and tell her current players.
Scott was hired last May to replace Carolyn Dorsey after Dorsey was let go after 11 seasons as head coach. Scott was promoted after serving as an assistant coach on Dorsey’s staff for four years while also helping out both the boys and girls basketball programs at Emporia Middle School. Scott served as an assistant coach on the boys staff under Brad Stewart, then an assistant under previous girls head coach Jordan Young, and eventually became the head coach of the eighth-grade team at EMS in 2024. Before arriving in Emporia, Scott taught at Oxford, was an assistant for their girls middle school program, and eventually was its head coach. Scott spent 2 1/2 years as a field experience coach under Dorsey and Bill Nienstedt while she was a student at Emporia State.
Scott said she’ll still be supporting the program even if she’s not the head coach.
Scott said whoever inherits the program will be lucky with a core group of returners for the 2025-26 season.
Scott led the Lady Spartans to a 4-17 record, including her first career win on January 21 at Wichita Independent. A search for a new girls basketball coach is underway. The next coach will make their debut on December 5 when the Lady Spartans open up the season against Lansing.
