An enhanced severe weather risk remains in place for the entire KVOE listening area to close out the upcoming weekend and with more storms possible to start the upcoming work week.
The National Weather Service says severe storm activity could develop by the late afternoon to early evening hours Sunday. A slight risk is in place for the area Monday evening.
Storms are expected to accompany a warm front forecasted to move into the area by Sunday afternoon, with the greatest risk for severe storms coming along and south of the front. All hazards will be possible with the greatest concerns being large hail, damaging winds and the possibility of tornadoes. Localized heavy rainfall is also expected, which could lead to concerns of flooding.
The severe weather forecast for Sunday is of note because Emporia High and five other area schools — Burlingame, Chase County, Eureka, Wabaunsee and Council Grove — have graduation activities that afternoon.
The main concerns for storms on Monday will be large hail and severe winds, however, isolated tornadic activity cannot be ruled out at this time. Forecast details may well change between now and Sunday, but the National Weather Service encourages people to review their safety plans, make sure warning devices like severe weather radios work correctly and monitor upcoming forecasts.
