The National Teachers Hall of Fame went to New York City to formally unveil this year’s induction class.
The traditional surprise announcements still took place earlier this year, but the results were embargoed until an appearance on CBS Mornings on Monday. Michelle Pearson, a social studies teacher from Thornton, Colorado, thanked her students during her surprise visit by the CBS crew and Hall of Fame administrators.
Dr Pascale Creek Pinner, an eighth-grade science teacher from Hilo, Hawaii, everything in her education career revolves around her students.
Michael Dunlea III, a fifth-grade teacher at Tabernacle, New Jersey. Dunlea didn’t enter education as a career until his late 30s and says he was somewhat jealous of the impact his wife had on people through her social work.
Tom Jenkins, a retired STEM and science teacher in Enon, Ohio — who was greeted at his home by his school’s marching band as part of his surprise.
Dr Valerie Jones Ford, a middle school math teacher and department chair in Atlanta, Georgia, says her students and fellow teachers inspire her.
As part of Monday’s on-air appearance, the teachers were gifted $20,000 each by Canva and their respective schools also got $20,000.
The Hall of Fame now prepares for the annual induction ceremonies June 16-20 in Emporia. The standard list of activities, including the annual On-Air Chat interview on KVOE, Emporia Municipal Band concert, rededication of the National Memorial to Fallen Educators and the formal induction, are planned again this year. New to the activity list is a tour of the Brown v Board Education National Historic Site.
8:20 am Monday:
Five accomplished educators will come to Emporia next month as the most recent inductees into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.
The Hall appeared on CBS Mornings on Monday to make the announcement:
*Michael Dunlea III, a fifth-grade teacher at Tabernacle, New Jersey

*Dr Valerie Jones Ford, a middle school math teacher and department chair in Atlanta, Georgia

The live nationwide announcement marks a departure from prior induction statements, which have followed surprise gatherings at the honored teacher’s school. Those special events still took place, but the results were embargoed until shortly before the appearance Monday on CBS.
