The Emporia High girls soccer team’s season came to an end Tuesday night in a regional first round game against Salina South at the EHS Turf Field.
Salina South scored the game’s first three goals and held off a late charge by the Lady Spartans, 3-2. The Cougars led 2-0 at halftime and added their third goal early in the second half. Emporia High got on the board when Ciara Esquivel scored in the 57th minute. Katie Smart made it 3-2 in the 61st minute. With just over 13 minutes to go in the match, the Lady Spartans had an 11 on 10 advantage due to a red card given to Salina South. Even with a player advantage, the Lady Spartans could not find the equalizer. Emporia High coach Oscar Macias was proud of how his team responded, but fell just short.
Emporia High finishes its season with a 9-8 record, the second consecutive nine-win season. The Lady Spartans lose Esquivel, Karla Morales, Loida Gamez, and Smart to graduation but return a strong core of juniors and underclassmen for the 2026 season.
