Severe storm activity is easing for Sunday evening, however, flooding will still be a concern with multiple rounds of showers and storms expected between now and the Memorial Day holiday.
The National Weather Service is anticipating upwards of two plus inches of rainfall across the area between Sunday and Monday, which could lead to elevated water levels in a few local water bodies. This includes the Neosho, Cottonwood and Marais de Cygnes rivers, thus setting up a possibility of flash flooding through midweek.
The extended rainfall follows a brief round of storms and showers in the overnight hours Saturday, which brought minor totals to portions of the area. At the KVOE studios, we received 0.5 inches. Other totals include:
*Hammond Heights – 0.8 inches
*Olpe Blacksmith Shop – 0.6 inches
While the forecast is calling for chances of thunderstorms, the chances for severe activity are very low as the NWS removed the listening area from a marginal risk category. That said, a slight risk still remains in place for Memorial Day with the main hazards being large hail, damaging wind,s and the possibility of a few tornadoes.
