This may be just the first of many announcements of Road closures due to the forecast calling for continuous rainfall throughout the day and additional inches possible. Drivers are reminded if they come across barricades on a roadway it is illegal to drive around or move them.
Also, if you come across a road with water over the top but no barricades, do not drive over them. Turn around, don’t drown.
6:36 am: Memorial Day
The list of weather-related schedule adjustments continues for the Memorial Day weekend.
The latest: Emporia’s annual Memorial Day service, which will move from the All Veterans Memorial to the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. Activities will still include preliminary music from the Emporia Municipal Band starting around 9 am, followed by the formal service at 9:30 am. KVOE will still broadcast the service on 1400 KVOE, 96.9 FM and KVOE.com/TV.
Meanwhile, the Jones Aquatic Center has yet to open, despite this being the facility’s official opening weekend. Rain and temperatures below 75 degrees have kept the facility closed both Saturday and Sunday, and the Memorial Day forecast — more rain with highs in the low 60s — makes it unlikely for a Monday opening. In fact, the current forecast may not allow for the Aquatic Center to open until Friday, due to rain and projected high temperatures.
Organizers of the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial Day fish fry weekend had already split this weekend’s activities, moving the meal to this past Saturday at Harry & Lloyd’s and other activities, including a car show and live music, to June 7.
