8:30 am Thursday: WEATHER: Flood warning continues for Neosho at Neosho Rapids after moderate rainfall
With light to moderate rainfall across parts of the KVOE listening area Wednesday night into Thursday morning, two of the three river-based flood warnings in place Wednesday have been canceled.
A warning continues for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids until late Sunday morning, even though the river is currently below flood stage — but the forecast indicates the river will climb above flood stage for a few hours Saturday morning into early afternoon. The river crested at 23.13 feet early Wednesday morning and is currently at just under 20.5 feet. It could have a secondary crest as high as 22.1 feet Saturday morning, just above flood stage of 22 feet, and go below flood stage after noon.
The flood warning for the Cottonwood River at Emporia was lifted Wednesday afternoon, reissued Wednesday evening with concerns of up to 1.5 inches of rain pushing the river up nearly two feet above flood stage and then lifted again when actual rainfall amounts further upstream were less than expected. The river crested at 22.83 feet Tuesday afternoon and is now just under 15 feet.
The warning for the Cottonwood at Florence was in effect for several hours, again due to concerns of moderate to heavy rain pushing the river about 1.5 feet above the 22-foot flood stage. The river, now at nearly 5.5 feet, may get to 21.9 feet by Friday morning.
