Will there be a primary election in Lyon County?
There needs to be a lot of candidates filing Monday morning to make that happen. State law says there needs to be three times the number of candidates for a given position — plus another candidate — to set a primary. At this point, the closest position is Emporia City Commission with seven candidates but needing 10 total. Several positions still do not have candidates, including Admire mayor, Neosho Rapids mayor and Neosho Rapids City Council.
Primary or not, County Clerk Amie Jones says her staff will be busy shortly after the filing and withdrawal deadline at noon Monday.
Friday saw Heather Schultz filing for Hartford City Council Position 4 and Taylor Jackson filing for Hartford City Council Position 2. Both are currently the only candidates on their respective ballots.
Also, Barbara Haag filed for Olpe City Council. She joins Rick Jones, Justin Steinlage and Carissa Wigton on the ballot, but three more candidates are needed to set up a primary.
