Part of a residential street near Emporia’s Bunge crush facility is closed to thru traffic as part of a sanitary sewer repair.
The city shut down East between Sixth and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks, or south of Fourth. The city says a 24-inch sanitary sewer line has corroded and collapsed under the railroad tracks, so crews are working with Nowak Construction to both remove the damaged pipe and install new 24-inch plastic pipe. There was a break at the casing, and the city says an inspection unveiled corrosion along the entire encased pipe.
The closure goes until further notice.
Separately, now that 12th and Prairie has reopened to traffic after late-stage work on the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement project, work has resumed near 18th and Prairie.
In addition to waterline installation and pavement work for close to a month, City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says there will be a temporary, short-term water system outage Friday along Prairie from 18th south to 15th, including Ashley II Estates and homes along Prairie Lane. The outage begins Friday morning and should be done before the end of the day as crews make connections at 18th and Prairie.
The work at 18th and Prairie signals the end of the overall project, which has seen new and larger water pipes, as well as service lines and other connections, from the Water Treatment Plant east to 24th and south to 12th over the last year.
