Early forecasts were a bit bleak, but conditions turned out near perfect for the fifth annual Bryan Douglas Memorial Softball Tournament Saturday.
A half dozen teams took part in the annual fundraiser supporting the Choose How You Respond Fund, established in memory of Douglas, a longtime local chiropractor who passed away from cancer in 2021 and was well known for his love of sports and, most importantly, supporting young athletes. Organizer and wife of the late Bryan Douglas, Lori Douglas, says she was concerned they may not be able to hold the event this year due to recent flooding and overnight rainfall.
The event is always a special one for the Douglas family and their various supporters, but Lori Douglas says this year was a bit extra special as the fundraiser fell on a very important day.
Of the many teams that participated in the event, the majority were made up of close friends and family, which has been a constant occurrence since the inaugural tournament back in 2021. Lori Douglas tells KVOE News she could not be more thankful to everyone who has made the tournament a part of their annual event calendar, saying it often feels like a family reunion rather than a fundraiser.
All proceeds will go to support the Choose How You Respond Fund, which provides funds to qualifying individuals who are facing expenses related to cancer treatment. Choose How You Respond is not just the name of the foundation established in Douglas’ memory, Lori Douglas says it has truly become her and her family’s mantra over the years and one they have leaned on heavily since Bryan’s passing.
In addition to the softball tournament, the event also included shaved ice, hot dogs and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event are currently pending.
