Earlier this week, KVOE News reported that Southwick House had received a multi-year allocation from the Emporia Lions Club Cleeve Cook Fund for the construction of its new transitional housing facility in Emporia. Based on a news release from the agency on Tuesday, that donation was just the tip of the iceberg in recent financial commitments to the project.
Southwick announced Tuesday that in addition to the two-year $50,000 allocation from the Lions Club, the agency has also received a $25,000 grant from the EL and Z Irene Hopkins Family Foundation, bringing the total allocation to $75,000. Those funds will be put towards the construction of the new 9,000 square foot facility being constructed at 115 East Logan Street.
In the aforementioned news release, Southwick Board President Jeremy Dorsey stated, “These gifts are very important to our ongoing efforts to provide low-barrier transitional housing for Lyon and surrounding counties. I am grateful to these families and their visions of a better world.”
Of the donations, Hopkins Foundation Trustee Michelle Hopkins-Molinaro stated, “Our mission is to support programs that tangibly improve the quality of life for children and families, and transitional housing is important.” Lions Club member Dave Eldridge stated the donation is a “really good fit” for the club.
The donations come with the capital campaign for the facility well over the halfway mark towards its $3.6 million goal. At this time, Southwick is still on track to break ground on the facility by spring of next year.
