So far, there hasn’t been a widespread impact reported in Lyon County after heavy rainfall Tuesday.
Renewed flooding has been noted on Road 150 from Kansas Highway 99 to Road J, south to Road 140 and then back to the highway. Drivers are urged to be cautious, however, because river-based flooding is already a concern at several area gauges:
*The Neosho River at Neosho Rapids is in a flood warning from Thursday afternoon to late Sunday evening. The river was at 18.1 feet at 6 am and climbing. It should go above the 22-foot flood stage Thursday evening, crest at 22.9 feet early Friday and go below flood stage Sunday morning.
*The Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls is in a flood warning until late Thursday morning. The river was at 6.8 feet as of 6:15 am and climbing. The forecast has the river going above the 9-foot flood stage Wednesday morning, crest at 9.5 feet early Wednesday afternoon and go below flood stage Wednesday evening.
*The Cottonwood at Florence is in a flood warning from Wednesday afternoon to late Wednesday night. The river was at 20.62 feet at 6:15 am and climbing. It should go above the 22-foot flood stage around noon Wednesday, crest at 22.1 feet soon after that and go below flood stage by early evening.
Separately, the northern half of Chase County remains in a flood warning until 9:30 am. The warning includes Bazaar, Cedar Point, Cottonwood Falls, Elmdale, Saffordville, Strong City and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Chase County has had notable impacts from Tuesday’s rainfall as Kansas Highway 177 flooded two city blocks in Cottonwood Falls as well as a separate stretch of road between Cottonwood Falls and Matfield Green. No issues are reported in either area Wednesday morning, but U Road from Old Highway 50 to 210 Road and WP Road to 210 Road are listed as flooded.
Flooding that developed two weeks ago and lasted over a week is still evident in eastern Lyon County with a handful of roads closed:
*Road 135 from V-6 to W
*Road 145 from V-6 to Neosho Rapids
*Road 150 from N to P
*Road V-6 from 135 to 140; from 140 to 145
