One quarry request is moving forward with Lyon County Commission approval. Another is no longer on the table due to a business decision.
Commissioners on Thursday considered the separate Conditional Use Permit requests from US Stone involving a proposed quarry in the 1200 block of Road C and the Rockland Stone request in the 100 block of Road 140. Rockland’s request was approved 3-0 with two major changes: the proposed haul route, which had originally been set to use Road 140 west to Road A and north to US Highway 50, will now go further west into Chase County before turning north to US-50, while the number of weekly loads was increased from 10 to 15 after a recommendation from the Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board.
The Rockland request also moved forward despite initial concerns from Commissioner Chris Bartel on what he said were several operations violations, which Rockland says were addressed, as well as potential issues with reclamation — which Rockland says can be a five-year process before the company can start.
While the Rockland request was approved, US Stone withdrew its rezoning request after extended concerns about the proposed haul route, which used at least two minimum maintenance roads before reaching US Highway 50. Commissioners had asked US Stone to oversee repairs to the proposed haul route, as well as add speed limitations and load limits, before the board would consider approval.
US Stone can re-submit its request, but it would need a year to do so if it decides to submit an identical request to the one it withdrew. An adjusted request could be submitted within 30 days.
