USD 253 Emporia is in a summer of change, especially at the top.
Just at Mary Herbert Education Center, nearly 90 years of experience is packing up and heading out with the retirements of Superintendent Allison Anderson-Harder, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Student Services Judy Stanley and Director of Human Resources Jared Giffin.
Anderson-Harder started her career as a school counselor and psychologist before joining the district administrative team. She’s returning to her roots — and she’s moving to do so.
Stanley says she has been driven by a desire to be a lifelong learner — which fit her well as she moved into administration.
Giffin says he will miss his time in the district.
Notable retirements are also taking place outside Mary Herbert. Emporia Middle School art teacher Kristin Oberle is wrapping up 40 years with Emporia Public Schools as she takes over ownership of Trox Gallery & Gifts. She has seen a lot of changes in her four decades of teaching.
Emporia High Academic Coach Jana Marstall is retiring, ending a 35-year career with USD 253. She was drawn to education largely because of her family.
Bus driver Evelyn Cunningham is ending 24 years with the district.
Officially, the 2025-26 academic year begins Tuesday. Jump Start for new students either to the district or their respective schools is Aug. 19. The first official day of classes is Aug. 20.
