According to recently announced gubernatorial candidate and Democratic Kansas Senator Cindy Holscher, some lawmakers have been less than responsive when it comes to local voters’ desire for more engagement and opportunities to glean information from the state level, hence her decision to make a recent stop in Emporia Saturday for a meet and greet with local constituents.
While speaking with KVOE News ahead of the event, Holscher stated that the purpose of her current Rural Kansas Tour has been to help quench the “thirst for information” that state residents have conveyed to her in recent months.
Holscher says more than information, she hopes individuals will take away from her appearance Saturday, and others down the road, that there are those at the state level who want to hear their concerns and thoughts and respond to them accordingly.
While she has traveled to many different communities across the state during her tour, Holscher says there has been one very prevalent theme amongst those with whom she has spoken: affordability issues.
Around 30 individuals were in attendance to speak with Senator Holscher during the hour-long event held inside the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church parish hall. Her stop in Emporia comes two weeks after Holscher officially launched her campaign for governor, although she has yet to officially file for the office according to the Kansas Secretary of State’s website as of her appearance Saturday.
The only candidate currently on the ballot for Governor is conservative Republican talk show host Doug Billings. Secretary of State Scott Schwab and former governor and lieutenant governor Jeff Colyer, both Republicans, have announced their intentions to run for the office, although neither has filed for the office at this time.
Holscher served as 16th District Representative in the Kansas House from 2017 to 2020 before being elected to represent the state’s 8th district in the Senate in 2021.
