Emporia’s Burger King has been at 18th and Industrial Road for over a decade after moving from the east side of town. By the end of the year, it will be back at its old address.
Over the weekend, local management announced plans to move to 1215 East 12th, where Burger King had operated for years before filing a demolition permit in December 2010. The current plan is to build a new restaurant and open to the public by Dec. 9.
Genesh Realty of Lenexa has owned the property since before the previous restaurant was demolished.
The new facility is part of Burger King’s “Sizzle” concept as part of the restaurant chain’s $400 million “Reclaim the Flame” initiative nationally, announced in 2022. BK will install double drive-thru lanes as McDonald’s currently uses. It will also include digital ordering kiosks, menu enhancements and updated dining room decor and exterior.
Burger King’s planned return is the latest development near 12th and Burlingame Road, including new Dollar General and Dollar Tree stores and a new Dillons pharmacy over the last five years. The Mahtropolis housing development continues with nearly 30 homes planned just north of Interstate 35.
