Guess what — scammers targeting the Kansas Department of Transportation are at it again.
Over the past week, scammers sent out a blast of scam texts indicating the “Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles,” listed in the texts as both the BMV and DMV, would start enforcing a range of penalties for outstanding traffic tickets. The list of penalties resembled the alleged list sent through a text blast in June:
*Reports to the “DMV” violation database
*Registration suspension starting June 25 and driving privilege suspension for 30 days
*Unspecified transfer to a toll booth for a 35-percent service fee
*Potential prosecution and alleged negative impacts on credit scores.
The texts also have a payment link included.
If you receive such a text, authorities urge you to not click or open any of the links included. They also tell you never to provide personal or financial details. Instead, report the texts to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
