The Professional Disc Golf Association’s Junior World Championships now underway in Emporia have a distinctly black-and-gold color to the event.
Reason being: Emporia State University is a participating sponsor with numerous activities taking place over the next week — ranging from official opening ceremonies from 6-7 pm Monday at Plumb Hall to the ParTEE on the Lawn block party event at Kellogg Circle from 6-9 pm Friday.
On the most recent ESU Buzz, ESU Outreach and Engagement Manager Sydney Doudna says on-campus activities also include campus tours of spaces like the Memorial Union, Towers Complex and other nearby areas.
Tournament Director Jackie Morris is looking forward to the Disc Golf Experience at Welch Stadium on Tuesday. Part of that experience includes a chance to play a 9-hole course designed by one-time PDGA world champion Eric McCabe, who now coaches Emporia State’s disc golf program, and then take part in a special Q&A event.
Morris says the ParTEE will be a big event on campus.
Doudna sees recruiting opportunities for young disc golfers — and others — with the tourney now underway.
It’s a full field with over 400 participants in town, as well as family visiting Emporia. Play goes Tuesday through Saturday at Champions Landing, Jones East, Jones West and Peter Pan Park. Other related activities are taking place at the Axe Shedd, David Traylor Zoo, Dynamic Discs, the Emporia Arts Center, Emporia Granada Theatre and Imaginarium among other locations.
