There has been progress in repairing a Kansas Turnpike bridge damaged by heavy equipment outside Emporia earlier this year. More progress is coming, but this aspect of work will mean a change in traffic flow for US Highway 50 drivers under the Turnpike bridge.
The Turnpike Authority has been using head-to-head traffic almost exclusively since an oversized load cut through several I-beams supporting the bridge April 18, constricting eastbound traffic to the outside eastbound lane and bringing westbound traffic to the eastbound inside lane. Between Thursday and Sunday morning, both eastbound and westbound inside lanes will be closed as repairs continue — meaning drivers will use their respective outside lanes to get around the work zone. Once this round of work is done, head-to-head traffic will resume using the eastbound lanes.
Repairs could continue well into the fall.
