That break we had from the heat Thursday?
High temperatures struggled to 80 degrees Thursday. After reaching 90 Friday, high temperatures will be around 100 for the next week — including Saturday, when a high of 98 is expected. That has prompted the National Weather Service to issue an expansive heat warning. All area counties are included through 7 pm Wednesday, even though the current forecast calls for highs above 100 degrees for Thursday and Friday as well.
Heat index readings through next week will be consistently between 102-106.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Prieto says proper hydration is a big key to beating the heat, but there are other steps people can take that will help.
The heat wave follows an occasionally stormy evening for the Flint Hills, which included a severe thunderstorm warning for Chase County and periods of showers and storms mainly north of Kansas Highway 58. Storms provided opportunities for good shelf cloud photos, but rain totals were spotty.
