The Emporia Farmer’s Market once again played host to a pair of local traditions Saturday morning.
As part of the market’s annual Homegrown Celebration, ESB Financial once again sponsored the annual watermelon contest, which saw young residents rolling, eating and spitting in a series of fun-natured competitions. ESB Marketing Officer Kandace Wakeman says the competition is all about summertime fun.
This year was the 20th edition of the contest and ESB President Michael Black says the Farmer’s Market has always been a tremendous partner in the event.
Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods, one of three judges for the contest Saturday, says both Homegrown and the watermelon contest are great examples of why it is important to shop and support local businesses and entrepreneurs.
The Emporia Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8-10:30 am, through October, at the Seventh and Merchant parking lot. Wednesday markets will continue through September every Wednesday evening from 5 pm to 6:30 pm.
