After a weather-related delay, Lyon County Emergency Management began handing out free severe weather radios at the Lyon County Fair on Sunday.
Emergency Management was originally planning to give away some of its stock of 400 weather radios Saturday, but decided to wait until Sunday after the 4-H Rodeo at the grandstand was postponed. Turnout was strong with around 100 weather radios handed out. Another 100 radios were handed out Monday.
The weather radios are part of Emergency Management’s work to obtain a federal hazard mitigation grant. According to Director Jarrod Fell, the grant reflects ongoing efforts to update the county’s hazard plan.
Fell says the application process took months, but it’s ending well for county residents.
Fell says the heavy rain from Thursday and Friday, along with nearby flooding in Chase and Greenwood counties, highlight the need for having a severe weather radio nearby.
Emergency Management will be at the Fairgrounds during grandstand events to give away the weather radios at no charge. The upcoming schedule:
*Monday: 5:30-7:30 pm
*Tuesday: 5:30-7:30 pm
*Saturday: 5:30-7:30 pm
*Aug. 7: 5:30-7:30 pm
*Aug. 9: 5:30-7:30 pm
