Emporia city commissioners will have an update on plans for a major housing development as part of their business Wednesday.
Commissioners will discuss approval of a preliminary Planned Unit Development for the Cedarbrook Meadows plan officially at 4500 West 18th. Developers want to build over 120 homes across 30 acres between Jones Aquatic Center and Road G. Eight acres are also reserved for commercial development along Road G just north of Frontier Farm Credit.
The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission recommended approval — but only if the minimum lot width was increased and the lot sizes overall were increased. The matter is before the City Commission now because it inadvertently wasn’t put in front of the board earlier.
If the entire project gains local approval, developers have proposed a large area for potential future construction, essentially filling the currently-rural space south of 30th, east of G and west of the Kansas Turnpike.
As far as the City Commission meeting is concerned, the action session will include a letter from the Kansas Department of Transportation about allocated funds for upcoming City Connecting Link Improvement Project, or CCLIP work — in this case, fiscal 2028 work to mill and overlay US Highway 50 from Prairie to Neosho. The consent agenda, where several items can be addressed and handled with one vote, includes a remodel project for the Emporia Public Library and a bid for expanding the David Traylor Zoo’s king vulture exhibit.
Following an executive session on economic development, commissioners will have a study session dedicated to what the city calls budget development.
The action meeting begins at 11 am at the Municipal Court Room. The study meeting follows at White Auditorium City Conference Room 1AB.
