Lyon County and almost surrounding counties have been included in Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s latest request for a major presidential disaster declaration.
The governor’s official request also includes Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris and Osage counties.
The request covers June 3-7 and follows severe thunderstorms and extremely heavy rain that led to widespread flooding. Numerous road segments in Lyon and surrounding counties were damaged as some locations got 10 inches of rain or more just during that stretch after additional heavy rain in late May.
If the declaration is approved, Governor Kelly says funds will specifically help municipally-owned utilities and rural electric cooperatives
