Army worms are literally marching across Emporia at this time.
The pest began making its presence known earlier this week. On KVOE’s In The Garden program Thursday, Lyon County Extension Horticulturist Travis Carmichael says young worms are up to.075 inches long, while adults can be up to 1.5 inches. Army worms are dark green in color and they have one easy way to distinguish themselves.
Carmichael says the army worms “can mow off grass.”
Carmichael says treatments involve sprays of chemicals like permethrine or other permethroids. Neem oil is also an option, but Carmichael says the permethrines last longer. Dogs can go out in treated yards so long as they are dry.
