Isolated severe storms and widespread moderate to heavy rainfall remain distinctly possible early Sunday through much of Monday.
Following high temperatures in the mid-90s and heat index readings around 100 degrees, storms will develop ahead of a slow-moving cold front and begin pushing across the KVOE listening area early Sunday morning. Along with marginal risks for wind and hail both early Sunday morning and between Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, heavy rainfall remains a notable risk. The National Weather Service Forecast Points website indicates Emporia could get over 2 inches of rain between early Sunday morning and Monday afternoon. Some residents in the KVOE listening area, especially along and north of the US Highway 56 corridor, could get up to 3 inches of rain.
Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in a flood watch from 1 am Sunday to 7 am Monday.
5:15 am Saturday: Steamy Saturday, soggy Sunday? Flood watch follows heat advisory for many area counties
Short-term weather conditions are changing soon, but there is still one more day of uncomfortably hot weather ahead.
The National Weather Service says air temperatures could reach the upper 90s by late Saturday afternoon and heat index readings could get to 103. As a result, a heat advisory has been announced for Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood and Osage counties until 8 pm Saturday.
A cold front is slowly pushing across the area later this weekend, and it won’t drop high temperatures by significant amounts Sunday as highs climb to the low 90s. However, low 80s are ahead Monday — and rounds of storms early Sunday through late Monday bring both a low-end severe weather risk and a flooding risk to the area. Marginal severe weather risks are ahead both late Saturday night and Sunday evening. Wind and hail are the hazards Saturday night, with wind as the concern Sunday. Meanwhile, storms — especially Sunday — could drop anywhere from 2-3 inches of rain, especially if they train or cover the same ground repeatedly. A flood watch involves Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 1 am Sunday to 7 am Monday.
