In a way, it’s like The Who.
Not only is the Emporia Recreation Commission operating after-school programs for USD 253 Emporia Public Schools, but the overall program will bear the name of RecXtra once again. On KVOE’s Morning Show Newsmaker segment program Friday, Rec Commission Director Amanda Gutierrez says it would be hard to call the program by any other name.
Gutierrez has been pleasantly surprised by the initial reaction, judging by registrations that started Monday.
Gutierrez says the program will have similar costs to last year, when the program was run by the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas:
*$70 per month for students paying full price for school lunches
*$50 per month for students on reduced lunch prices
*$30 per month for students qualifying for free school lunches
There will also be flexibility for parents so they don’t have to sign up their children for the entire academic year.
Gutierrez says USD 253, in part due to a $375,000 separation agreement payment through Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas, can fund the RecXtra program for the next three years — giving ample opportunity to find more long-term funding sources. Meanwhile, USD 253 Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren appreciates the Rec Commission’s efforts to provide this service.
RecXtra begins Aug. 25 at all USD 253 elementary schools. Program activities will take place only on full school days. Pick-up times will be 5:30 pm.
